The Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center has paid a ransom of $17,000 to hackers who managed to install a malware on the hospitals computers.

The ransom was paid in bitcoins, the crypto currency that is practically impossible to trace and is the choice currency for under-the-radar cyber transactions by cyber criminals.

“The malware locks systems by encrypting files and demanding ransom to obtain the decryption key. The quickest and most efficient way to restore our systems and administrative functions was to pay the ransom and obtain the decryption key,” Stefanek said. “In the best interest of restoring normal operations, we did this.”

The hospital says the FBI has been brought in to investigate the incident.
